What is waste acceptance criteria?
These are the quantitative or qualitative requirements established by the regulatory authority—or set by an operator and approved by the authority—that define the conditions under which a waste form and its packaging may be accepted by a waste management facility operator.
Why is this necessary?
It is essential to:
- Ensure both operational and long-term safety in handling, transport, storage, and disposal.
- Prevent technical or operational issues within disposal and storage facilities.
- Provide a consistent framework for communication between radioactive waste generators and successive facility operators.
- Enable standardisation of operational processes.
- Maintain effective waste tracking and traceability.
- Support waste producers in selecting appropriate waste packaging and processing technologies.
